Vacancy at Women's Legal Service - CEO

Friday 24 Feb 2017

WLS are in the process of recruiting a CEO - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

A unique opportunity exists for an experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to join a progressive, values-driven organisation helping Queensland women and their children who experience domestic violence and includes:

  • generous salary sacrifice and fringe benefit entitlements, plus 6 weeks’ paid annual leave
  • inner Brisbane suburban location with on-site parking
  • an exciting external facing leadership position
  • using your legal skills to make a positive difference
  • permanent full-time position.

Your new organisation

Women’s Legal Service (WLS) is a leading mid-sized not-for-profit organisation providing free legal and welfare help to Queensland women who experience domestic violence, family law and child protection matters.

This year, WLS will help over 10,000 women. We are focussed on best practice and innovation in domestic violence prevention. Our staff team and 100 volunteers are dedicated to creating safer futures.

Your new role

You will work closely with the Management Committee to enable effective and efficient governance, including providing information, strategic advice and recommendations on current and emerging issues, opportunities and risks relevant to operations, client needs, community issues and the wider policy environment WLS operates within.

You will oversee and secure stakeholder support, strategic relationships, and funding relevant to the WLS mission and services, and maintain a positive public profile for WLS, as well as participating in law reform and community legal education activities.

Your leadership skills will ensure an efficient, well-functioning service, including overseeing organisational budgets, robust business systems, compliant policies and procedures, and strengthening organisational capacity through improvement and change. You will lead a high performing leadership team and supervise staff and support managers to fulfil their people management responsibilities, and foster a collaborative team culture for staff and volunteers, which is professional, productive and supportive, and complies with WLS values and feminist principles.

From time to time, this may involve effectively managing difficult and complex issues and complaints which may impact on stakeholder or community perceptions of the effectiveness and activities of WLS.

Travel between the Brisbane and Gold Coast offices will be required.

What you need to be successful

You will hold a tertiary qualification in law or social sciences, or a related field relevant to community services (essential).

You will be a highly competent leader, with experience in organisational, people, and change management, as well as a proven ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary client service environment. Your communication and negotiation skills will be well developed, enabling you to consult and build relationships and speak on behalf of WLS to stakeholders and the media. You will have a solid understanding of the community justice sector and wider social political environment.

Experienced leaders from the not-for-profit sector and/or who have worked with a Management Committee/Board are strongly encouraged to apply.

What you will get in return

This is a fantastic opportunity for an applicant passionate about advocating for justice for Queensland’s most vulnerable women, making a difference in the community, and being at the forefront of a dynamic service. If you are an experienced leader or manager looking to move from a traditional management role, community legal centre or another not-for-profit organisation, this is your chance to make a difference.
