Volunteering at Women's Legal Service
Our Service is reliant on the participation of volunteers to provide our vital services. Without volunteers, we would be unable to draw on the extensive base of skills and experience with which we provide quality legal assistance to women.
Volunteering with WLS can provide you with many rewards including an opportunity to enhance women’s access to justice, inclusion in our referral box and access to our free in-house training program and resources.
Evening Advice Sessions
The evening advice sessions staffed by volunteers are conducted every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Women telephone or drop in during these times for legal advice. No appointment is required. Due to demand, advice is usually limited to appropriately 20 minutes.
Each evening advice session is staffed by four lawyers and two support workers. We try to ensure there are three family law practitioners and one generalist lawyer on duty each night. The generalist lawyers assist our clients with a wide of legal issues including discrimination, criminal law, personal injuries and employment matters.
Our support workers come from diverse backgrounds and are trainee lawyers, social workers, law students or social work students.
The WLS roster is a monthly cycle and volunteers are allocated a regular evening for attendance.
